willy wonka & the chocolate factory. fun at the Uark.

Last Friday (December 18th), Randy and I headed to the Uark Ballroom for ‘Dinner and a Movie’. The featured flick was the 1971 “classic” Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. It was hilarious. It had a been a long time since I had seen it and man is that movie amusing! The food was beyond yummy! I ate some pork chops, fancy macaroni and cheese, and some sweet potato mash. SO GOOD!!!

Unfortunately, not too many people came to the event besides us.

Our two good friends Dave and Courtney came. And then we were there. And aside from the four of us, there were four other people. That’s it. We had the place set up for about 70 people but obviously those seats weren’t used – which is very discouraging, to say the least.

My family owns the Uark. It is part of my husband’s job to “manage” it and he works hard. Very hard. Too hard. People in town talk about how much they like it - how supportive they are of the Uark and the events it holds. But do they actually come? No.

It really upsets Randy. He came home talking about how we need to move out of Fayetteville and how Fayetteville has nothing for him - blah, blah, blah.

It was absolutely depressing to hear him talk like that. But I do understand. He works hard. We spend lots of money to have these events - money that is wasted when no one shows up. Food that is wasted. Time and energy that is wasted. It is ridiculous.

Well, that was my little vent. I will say that I am immensely grateful to Courtney and Dave for coming out. I don’t know if you realize how much that meant to me. Thank you.

  1. That is sad. It sounds like a fun place. The oompa loompas scare me - maybe they scare others too?

Great pictures on your other posts. What a fun time you had this past week!!!

  2. Oh no, that is sad that no one showed up especially considering how great it sounds like the show and food is! If we were close I would for sure be there! :)

  3. I totally understand and I hate that for Randy. I think the timing had a lot to do with it. People busy with holiday parties, family in town, etc. I don't have a solution, but I know when I have been to the UARK lately I have heard great things.

PS- I thought Dory was going to go to the show.

  4. That stinks, Melissa! I'm sorry ya'll have to deal with that as a part of Randy's job...I'm sure it's disappointing. I hope someday we'll get to come, but we don't typically get to drop that much money for a night out-- paying through the nose for daycare has pretty much busted our date night budget! :-)

  5. I agree with Mary- the timing of this event is the only reason that we weren't there....we REALLY wanted to be a part of it, but we were stuck doing X-mas with the in-laws that weekend.

I feel for Randy as well. I do have one piece of advice for him- ask him to send out the facebook invites to these things earlier so that we can plan further ahead. I often get the invites the week of....and I plan at least 2 months in advance, as you know. =)

I really can't believe that less than 10 people showed up...that's just terrible. On the bright side, you look FAB in that picture!
