This past weekend, I went down to Little Rock.
At dinner, the topic of baby names came up. In conversation, I mentioned that we are thinking ‘Amelia Grace’ if and when we have another baby and if that baby happens to be a girl.
My Mimi said, “like Amelia Bedelia”… I have NO clue who or what she is referring to. After looking on the Internet I now know that Amelia Bedelia is the lead character in a series of children’s books. I do not know if it is a good thing or a bad thing that my Mimi’s immediate point of reference when hearing the name ‘Amelia’ is ‘Amelia Bedelia’… but I’m leaning towards not a good thing.
My sister, Mary, stated that when she hears the name Amelia, she immediately thinks of plane crashes and being lost. Think Amelia Earhart. Definitely not a good thing and she confirmed that when questioned further. She was definitely not shy in expressing her dislike of the name.
My Aunt Linda flat out said that she didn't like the name. Her face was priceless and said it all. She was not a fan.
My Uncle David remarked that the most disliked girl in his office’s name is none other than Amelia. And he went on the say that he too is not a fan of the name Amelia… to say the least.
Now just because some of my family members don’t like the name doesn't mean that I won’t name my hypothetical future daughter Amelia, but it doesn't bode well for the moniker either. I want people to like the name; especially my family and close friends.
I suppose that only time will tell if this little dinner discussion has any effect… Amelia Grace… are you in or are you out? And will it even be an issue? Who knows.
I love Amelia! I grew up reading the Amelia Bedelia books and enjoyed them as a child. It's a name we'd consider.

I love the name...and have never heard of Amelia Bedelia. There will always be people who don't like the name that you choose, but they will learn to love it once a little Amelia is looking up at them!

You didn't read Amelia Bedelia?! Go get one and read it!!
ReplyDeleteI think that if and when you had a girl and named her Amelia, everyone would love it because they would love HER! So you could change the negative connotations that the name has for everyone by giving them a sweet, fabulous Amelia instead!! Right?? haha!
ReplyDeleteI love the name!! (and the books, too. i don't think it's mutually exclusive :)
ReplyDeleteI think Amelia Grace is a fabulous name. I love the name Grace so anything that goes with it sounds good to me!

Just for the record...I have to say, I love the name! While I do think of Amelia Earhart, it makes me think of bravery...she was a pioneer- for women and aviation in general! In the early 1900s, airplanes were incredibly unreliable- but she managed to set multiple records and do great things...so she died doing what she loved! She was determined, focused, and an incredible role model- all of these things is what the name invokes... in my book! :)
